THE COW PATTIES WERE OKAY, BUT THE WET HORSE POOP WAS A PROBLEM

I hope to put up some pictures, but we’ve not gotten around to loading them onto the computer. For Thanksgiving we, my husband, myself, and the 4 kiddos, went to a Civil War re-enactment. There was animal waste everywhere. But even so, we had a blast.

It was a wonderful way to finish up our Civil War studies before moving on. The costumes were new but authentically made. And the actors really believed that they were still fighting the Civil War. One of the Confederates tried to start a very lengthy discussion with our family about how Lincoln was not validly elected as President. He mentioned that he had not been put on any Southern ballots because of the cost of doing so. He was very adamant that the South was mistreated. I heard his wife whisper into his ear, “Honey, shhh, we’re in the Union camp.” We politely excused ourselves from the conversation. His comments didn’t sit too well with my 8 yo son who sees clearly that because of the issue of slavery the south was wrong. I have chosen, for his age, not to elaborate on how the North really fit into the slavery issue.

There were cannons and amazingly loud blasts as they fired them at each other in battle. Smoke filled the air, and we, along with hundreds of spectators, sat on the ground and watched them battle it out. U. S. Grant on his horse and drummer boys limping along the field–it was terrific.

Afterwards there were mock surgeries with extreme emotions and mild cursing and carrying on–it was fantastic!
